Chapter Nineteen

Pierre

Pierre was having a hard time getting his mind to focus. After his excited outburst, it somehow had zapped all his energy. Or that’s how it felt to him. He supposed that could be two days without food and very little sleep. The hope of Eliphas’s return was what had fed him the last few hours. It spurred him on and kept him motivated. Now his mate was actually there, Pierre’s tank was running on empty.

Words registered somewhere in his wooly mind. Spitfire. Was that what Eliphas had called him? The cutesy name he’d not heard in some time. Why was that?

He stared at Eliphas, watching his lips move. Everything sounded like it was coming at him through water. He could no longer find it in him to chatter back at his serious-looking mate. His little body hurt, his tiny muscles had cramped into position. Breathing was becoming an issue as he turned his head to where Raymond had been.

He had been right there… hadn’t he?

The pain from the magic no longer registered as his little heart swelled and broke at the emptiness beside him. Had he imagined his mate was with him before Eliphas arrived? Was it a hallucination?

Tears burned his nose, falling down his fur. Had he made it all up to keep himself sane?

He barely had the energy to sniff and wasn’t able to move his gaze back to Eliphas. Why wasn’t he helping him?

“Atlas and his big brain, they’re gonna figure this out. I swear, and when I get you home, I’m going to love on you for days, Spitfire. I’ll tell Quilliam and Cassius we need a vacation.”

A blanket of warmth covered Pierre.

Eliphas’s love.

He could feel it, despite the cage and the fact that nothing was making sense. In the past, Eliphas’s love had saved him. Somewhere deep inside, where that love sat, Pierre went. Eyes shutting, he let the tiredness take him.

“Open your eyes, Pierre,” a voice cajoled through the fog. “Hold on! You can’t leave me. I don’t know how to say goodbye for a second time. You hear me? Fight for us. Fight for our mate.” The voice continued on.

It lulled him like a mother singing a lullaby to their baby. He sank deeper into the welcoming darkness, letting the voice keep him company.
